Hello NOVAC!
Thanks to everyone who attended our meeting last month. Denise Silva
treated us with glorious photos of aurorae and gave us the real story about
capturing those photos. We also heard from Aydin Gokce about his
award-winning science fair project to build and test the practicality of
several types of solid, liquid, and hybrid rocket motors. Rob Lentini
presented David Werth with three awards from the Astronomical League to
recognize David's extraordinary history of outreach activity. A couple
members had traveled to NY for NEAF and shared some photos and stories
about the cool stuff they saw. Finally, we heard the latest update on AHSP (
http://www.ahsp.org) which is selling out fast.
Our next meeting is coming up on Sunday, June 10. We are going to start a
new short meeting segment geared to new folks - June will talk about
coordinate systems in astronomy and help answer the question of how
astronomers use Right Ascension and Declination to describe the position of
things in the sky. John will brief us on another constellation and we'll
get another update on AHSP.
Our featured speaker will be David Doyle. David is going to tell us about
the Chandler Wobble, a small variation of the Earth's axis of rotation, and
the critical role that a small observatory in Gaithersburg played in
measuring this phenomenon.
Before the general meeting, we will be at Brion's Grille for dinner again -
details will be forthcoming in another message about a week before the
meeting.
I look forward to seeing many of you in June.
Best,
-Chris Kagy
President, NOVAC
